The BPE is a companion processor for the DWT transform processor and performs the compression function outlined in CCSDS 122.0-B-1.

Description
The Bit-Plane Encoder is an ASIC that uses a sophisticated bit-plane encoding technique for compressing data output from a block transform such as the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), or Enhanced Discrete Cosine Transform (EDCT). In general, the BPE supports any decorrelator that produces 8 × 8 blocks of 24-bit two’s-complement transform data where energy compaction tends toward the lower frequencies.
The concatenated output bit string constitutes an embedded data format that allows progressive transmission and decoding, since data transfer starts at a lower bits-per-pixel (bpp) rate and proceeds to a higher bpp rate. The BPE is highly customizable, with more than 40 parameters, many of which can be dynamically updated through two asynchronous interfaces. The BPE also supports numerous user-defined output headers and bit-stream truncation conditions.
